Father Chris' Corner - September 21

God’s Purpose is Peace

Today September 21, is the United Nations International Day of Peace and all of us as Christians should be thankful that nations of the world would set aside a day to honor peace. What is frightening about the day is this, there is still warring, and despicable acts of violence threatening all of humankind all over the world. Peace, we can talk about it, we can try to rationalize its meaning, we can try to fathom what it would be like if we truly lived in a utopia, but none of this will come about until we all understand and recognize that God’s purpose is peace.

Peace comes when we honor our Creator in a way that causes us to be constantly reflective of our own being—a way that says to us, you too are created in the image of God. The elements of war come from deep seated hatred, lawlessness, revenge, and the unwillingness to be forgiving.  In our world leaders are blinded to the possibilities of peace, but only need to look to God who is the author of peace and the lover of concord.

The Psalmist says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.  The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth.  He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.  Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.  The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah” (Psalm 46)

If then we as Christians believe God’s word to be true, we are held accountable for doing all we can to bring peace to God’s world. Let us then on this day and always do all we can to honor God, because his purpose is peace.

Yours, for the building up of God’s kingdom.

Fr. Chris
